UChicago doesn’t publish the deferral rate but a very large number of EA’s seem to be deferred every year, and as of a few years ago only about 0.5% of those admitted RD were deferred from EA. The most effective way to signal commitment would be to switch to ED2. My OOS son applied EA with a 1320 SAT and a 30 ACT. His grades are good but just shy of 4.0 UW. He has 7 AP’s (the max our school offers), started a business 5 years ago, has solid essays, 4 year varsity athlete, leadership roles on campus.

@srparent15 @Knowsstuff my D sent her letter. Fall transcripts were finalized today and submitted by her guidance counselor. Her ranking actually went up two spots.

I am weary as I write, while we in Los Angeles experience the terrible fires unfolding around us. Though the USC campus is safe, the region is reeling with pain and loss. Friends and colleagues have been evacuated, many have lost their homes –including two (and probably more) who are receiving this message.

The 3,500 admitted students remain in consideration and will receive an update about their scholarship status on January 29. I expect that roughly one third of these will receive either a scholarship, or instructions on the next steps in a selection process. Last year 3.35% of applicants from the regular decision were accepted. A lot of solid applicants get deferred. At least when I was applying to OSU, deferrals were handled on a rolling basis (i.e. at any time someone could be accepted). If you are proactive you still have a solid shot. I don’t know what the deferral rate is but at the admitted students information session yesterday Nondorf said they had 14,600 applications in the early round and offered admission to just 8%. I believe that includes both ED and EA.
